GROOM 101: FIFTY SHADES OF GREY

grey-hair-1Grey hair? don’t care! No, really don’t. Trust me silver hair is ‘de rigueur’, so enjoy it while you can. Bin the dye (not a good look anyway) and embrace a more natural style. However, don’t be fooled, though grey hair sounds low maintenance, to rock a truly reflective silver coiff takes the right products and a scintilla of effort. Read on…

First things for you’ll need to get your hands on some blue shampoo. Yeah, you read that right, BLUE shampoo, in fact its almost purple and metallic, but don’t be scared I promise you will not come out with a lilac dyed ‘do!  L’Oréal Serie Expert Silver Neutralising shampoo and Cream is the way to go. Grey hair is actually white hair and has no pigment, its only when it blends in with the slightly more pigmented hair surrounding it that the overall effect appears that ‘silver’ colour that colourists find so difficult to mimic. The thing about silver hair though is that it easily picks up pollutants in the air and minerals in the water we bathe in and this turns its yellowy (smokers watch out!). Not a good look. The grey hair kind of takes on a warm tinge which is exactly what you DON’T want. Solution? Blue or purple shampoos – using them once a week will keep your hair looking more lustrous and shiny and remove any gross yellow tones. (This is also good for bottle blondes as it eliminates brassiness.)

FEELING BLUE? ESSENTIAL PRODUCTS:

Grey hair also tends to be drier so a good clear serum is a must. I love L’Oréal Techni Art Liss Control Plus from the recently reinvented and infamous Techni Art Range – an intense smoothing serum. Apply a walnut sized amount into towel-dried hair then blow dry into a style or allow it to dry naturally. This serum is perfect because any coloured styling products can stain even natural grey hair- imagine what they do to coloured platinum grey hair! Finally if you want to really counteract any insecurities about looking older its best to keep grey hair styles shorter and more dynamic on the sides. Grey hair tends to be unruly once it gets that little bit longer-which also has the tendency to make you look a bit older. So, keep your hairstyle shortish or keep it well groomed – L’Oréal Techni Art Liss Control smooth control gel-cream is awesome for a coiffed style

So get out there and embrace your silver fox and who knows you could be the next George Clooney.
